For those of you in the US or traveling in the US, I really think Amtrak is a great way to go.
My family has taken 2 vacations in the past by train and we are currently starting to plan another one.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 2002 we took a trip from Kansas City to Los Angeles. We boarded late at night in KC and spent 2 nights on the train before arriving in LA mid-morning. At the time I was 12 and my brother was 8. My mom really enjoyed it because we were able to get up and move around. There was no stopping for bathroom breaks or food because all were found right there on the train. We could watch the scenery or play games, and for a while we had a Native American man playing tribal tunes on a native american flute.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The other trip we took by train was from Oklahoma City to Fort Worth and then we transfered to another train that took us to San Antonio. We did this just last year and it was great. It took about 4 hours to go from OKC to Fort Worth. We had about an hour and a half layover in Fort Worth, before heading to San Antonio. The great thing was about a .25-.5 miles from the station in Fort Worth there were the beautiful Fort Worth Water Gardens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Worth_Water_Gardens).
This trip was very affordable for our family of 4 and took about the same amount of time as it would have if we had driven. We brought our own lunch to eat on the train so we wouldn't have to buy anything. We spent the time playing cards or just watching the scenery.

We're currently looking at a trip to San Francisco from Omaha.
