I ALWAYS pack one change of clothes in my carry-on bag, just in case I get to my destination and my bag doesn't arrive, which has happened more times than I care to remember.
Rolling your smaller clothing times, such as t-shirts, undergarments and shorts, makes a lot more room in the suitcase than regular folding.
Also, placing similar articles of clothing together instead of smashed together makes security checks far easier. With everything organized and in one place, the x-ray machines can more easily identify items that are out of place or suspicious. Further, if something is found to be suspicious, they can open your bag and check the item out without creating a giant mess inside the bag.
What I pack in my checked bag: Clothes for up to 5 days, depending on the length of your stay. [That means shirts, shorts/pants, socks, undergarments, jackets, hoodies, extra shoes, etc. If you are staying anywhere longer than 5 days, you can most likely find a coin-operated laundromat nearby or have your hotel wash your clothes for you if the service is available] Shampoo Body Wash/Soap Toothpaste and Toothbrush Hair Products
For carry-ons:
Take ONLY what you will use immediately before your flight, during your flight, and immediately after your flight, as well as smaller electronic items (cameras and laptops are NOT checked-luggage-friendly). Taking a ton of things with you in your carry-on creates extra weight for you to haul around in the terminal and between gates and aircraft, and it is not worth the hassle.
What I usually pack in my carry-on: One complete change of clothes (pants, undergarments, socks, t-shirt) Camera Laptop iPod One Book (or my textbooks during a school break) One pen and one pencil Travel-size Kleenex Identification Boarding Pass Wallet/Billfold Purse (if you carry one, you'll want it with you, duh.) ;D
I do not take soap/shampoo/toothpaste/etc in my carry-on because of liquid/gel restrictions that are in effect, and because if I really need them, there will be a gas station or other convenience store nearby or even inside the airport.

these are great suggestions! For longer trips that require more luggage, I'll usually vacuum-seal my shirts and jackets inside plastic bags. The amount you can pack is instantly doubled. But beware, most airlines will charge you extra if you go over their weight limit. On the plus side, you get to take ALL your fabulous outfits On that note, you should always pack at least one evening outfit or more, depending on how long your trip will last. You can't possibly foresee everything that will happen, and it's good to be prepared in case you meet a beautiful local who wants to take you out to dinner. (one of my friends met her husband this way) Strangely, I almost never have a carry-on. I HATE spending too much time at TSA and can't wait to get to the gate, so I avoid things that would cause a delay. There's also a whole bunch of items you don't really need to take with you. Call ahead to see if your hotel offers complimentary toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, etc. It's easier to use these than to lug around whatever you bring from home. Lastly, in my experience, it's best to travel on tuesdays, this is when airports are least busy.

It just depends on where I am going, what for and how long I am going to be there. I am becoming the queen of no checked luggage unless it is for longer than 3 days. When I travel for my judging meets I pack the following in my carry on: My uniform and shoes, a full change of comfy travel clothes, my baggie of 3 oz or less fluids (makeup included here), my curling iron and some hair goodies, some pjs and MY PILLOW (and sometimes Tux). I also bring my backpack with my computer, some energy bars and fruit, my ipod, any books/judging materials, a container with my cords and chargers (for ipod, phone and computer) and my purse. I gate check the larger carryon and bring the backpack in the plane. The backpack fits easily under the seat in front of me. I have also learned that your attitude at the security section means loads in getting through quickly. I decided early that the workers probably have one of the most boring jobs in the world and instead of being snotty (which is what I really would like to be most of the time because most of the stuff is SOOOOO STUPID), I just smile at them and shoot the breeze. Last weekend when I was returning home, I had a layover in SLC and my brothers took me to breakfast. I managed to time it well I guess because when I went back through security, there was nobody there. So one of the people asked how I was doing and I smiled and told them that I was great because I got breakfast bought for me! I ended up talking at length to like 3 of the agents who all wished me a nice trip (I had to leave or I would be late for my plane )
